Practicing STEM with games

Riet, author of the article on pages 8 – 9, tips this site. You can join it for free and play online for 6 months.

In the Vives SpellenLab, you can consult materials and try out games yourself. You can also follow a workshop on the use of games in your teaching. Book a half-day workshop, for example, and combine it with an outing to Bruges (Belgium). Great team day! Click on the logo for contact information.

Your fantasy is the limit

A role-playing game like the one Onno describes on pages 10 and 11 is not something you can do in 15 minutes. You really need to take your time! The preparation (reading the rules and the adventure) takes about an hour. Playing the game takes about one to two hours.

What you need: a game leader and 2 to 4 enthusiastic players and at least 3 dice. By the way, an afternoon of Dungeons & Dragons also includes a big bowl of goodies. Don’t forget!

Games in the maths lesson

In her article on pages 12 and 13, Anneke gives a checklist of conditions a good maths game should meet. You can download two overviews of games here.

Unfortunately, the games Shark Bay and Canadian Multiply can no longer be found here. For those, I refer you to Rondjerekenspel.nl.

Sustainable growth through cooperative play

On pages 14 – 16 Sacha writes about the importance of connecting in today’s world. And how cooperative play helps children to find that connection.

On her website Sacha sells various cooperative games that you do not see in the average games shop. For example, you will find the Marbushka series, the pictures of which accompany the article.

The puzzle sheet you can download here is also really one to sit down and play together.
